1. Information We Collect
To provide our mapping, recycling, and reporting services, we collect several types of information.
A. Precise Location Data
The core functionality of the TrashIt web application relies on your geographic location.
How we collect it: We use your browser's Geolocation API to request your current latitude and longitude.
How we use it: We use this data to center the map on your position, show you nearby waste disposal points, provide local garbage collection schedules, and allow you to report unauthorized dumping at your specific location.
Continuous Tracking: Please note that for the best user experience, our app may periodically re-locate your position to update the map as you move.
B. Visual Information (Camera Access)
TrashIt includes features that require access to your device's camera.
Barcode Scanning: We use your camera to scan product packaging to provide recycling instructions.
Issue Reporting: When reporting unauthorized waste dumping, you may choose to take a photograph to provide evidence to local authorities.
Processing: We only access your camera when you explicitly trigger these features (e.g., clicking "Scan wrapper" or "Report trash"). Photos are processed to be sent via your device's email client or uploaded to our reporting system as specified in the interface.
C. Usage and Analytics Data
We collect data to understand how our service is performing and to improve user experience.
Session Duration: We use the navigator.sendBeacon API to record how long a user spends on specific pages (e.g., the homepage). This is used for anonymous analytical purposes to understand engagement.
Browser Information: We may collect information about your browser language, device type, and browser version to ensure the application displays correctly in your local language and format.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect in various ways, including to:
Provide, operate, and maintain our web application.
Improve, personalize, and expand our services.
Understand and analyze how you use our web application.
Develop new features and functionality.
Communicate with you, either directly or through one of our partners, for customer service or to provide updates regarding our service.
Facilitate the reporting of environmental issues to local public services.
3. Third-Party Services and Open Data
TrashIt utilizes third-party technologies to provide its services. These third parties may collect information according to their own privacy policies:
OpenStreetMap (OSM): We use OpenStreetMap for our map tiles and data. Your requests for map tiles include your IP address and location data as part of the standard HTTP request to their servers.
Leaflet: We use the Leaflet JavaScript library to render interactive maps.
Quagga2: We use this library for barcode scanning via your camera.
Local Government/Public APIs: When you request local data or report an issue, information (such as your location and potentially your email) may be transmitted to local public service APIs or via your email client to local authorities.
4. Data Retention
We retain collected information only for as long as is necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Policy.
Location Data: Real-time location is processed in the session to provide map services and is not stored permanently unless you specifically submit a report.
Usage Analytics: Anonymous usage data is kept to help us improve our service metrics.
5. Security of Your Data
We value your trust in providing us your information. We use industry-standard methods (such as HTTPS/TLS encryption) to protect your data during transmission. However, please remember that no method of transmission over the internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure.
6. Children's Information
Another part of our priority is adding protection for children while using the internet.
